Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Bangor chert is translucent and banded, ranging in color from black to a dark bluish gray or greenish.

Texture: 
Smooth fine grain

Luster: Satin like luster

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Fossiliferous

Patina: Patina is a light tan to light brown,

Heat Treatment:  Not commonly heat treated, but heat treatment causes reddish banding.

Knapping:  Excellent flaking quality

Named for Bangor, Blout County, Alabama.  Bangor Chert is found as nodules in the Bangor Limestone formation and forms in ridge and valley regions of the lower Tennessee River valley of Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.
